In Memoriam: Claudia K. Allen

photograph of Claudia Allen with floral print dress in front of foliageClaudia Allen, MA, OTR, FAOTA who influenced generations of OT practitioners, students and educators around the world passed away on February 25, 2019. Her contributions to our profession and the field of rehabilitation are countless as she informed the practice of Occupational Therapy with persons with cognitive challenges and offered us many tools to provide client-centered care.

Rightfully, Claudia was named one of the 100 most influential people in our profession by AOTA for developing the Cognitive Disabilities Model, with its assessment tools and caregiver strategies that promote best ability to function for clients with cognitive impairments.

I had the privilege to attend many of her trainings and seminars throughout my career and now despite the sad news of her passing, I feel gratitude and humbleness to have learned directly from such an important person in our profession.

Thank you once again, Claudia Allen.

Pima Medical Institute Update

PMI student project at Pizzability, Denver

Posted: October 2, 2018

The Pima Medical Institute Denver OTA students have been dedicating their free time volunteering with the owner of Brewability Lab, Tiffany Fixter, on her latest endeavor, Pizzability.  After holding a SOTA happy hour at Brewability Labs, the students inquired about the upcoming restaurant and together created a volunteer opportunity that has been a valuable part of our educational experience. Tiffany’s goal is to provide employment opportunities for adults with Developmental Disabilities (DD) in positions they typically would not hold. Employees will be involved in all aspects of running the restaurant such as taking orders, making pizza, and providing an engaging experience for restaurant patrons. The ordering process at Brewability has been simplified to negate staff errors by color coding taps to corresponding beer...

Posted: July 25, 2018

Abstract: The Occupational Therapy Association of Colorado is looking for your help to re-energize our social media platform by highlighting some of the dedicated efforts that are occurring in the field across the state.  What will be your contribution to our diverse community?

“...Think about those who have helped you become who you are today. Some of them may be here right now. Some may be far away…. But wherever they are, if they’ve loved you, and encouraged you, and wanted what was best in life for you, they’re right inside yourself” -Fred Rogers (Dartmouth Office of Communications, 2018).
