In Memoriam: Mark Kaipust

Mark Kaipust, OTD, OTR/L died in a tragic auto accident along with his 7-year-old son, Taylor on September 4. Dr. Kaipust was a husband to Jamie and father of 3 boys, Kayden, Taylor and Isaiah. He was an assistant professor in Creighton University’s Occupational Therapy program and served as an Academic Clinical Education Coordinator.

Dr. Kaipust grew up in Omaha, NE and graduated from UNO with a BS in exercise science. Following graduation, he worked as a personal trainer, freshmen basketball coach at Gross Catholic High School, and founded the Golf Performance Institute. He taught exercise science at Vatterott College in Omaha and went on to graduate from the OTD program at Creighton University in 2008. His clinical practice included upper extremity orthopedics and neurological populations. As an advocate for sports participation, he founded the Junior Cougars basketball team. Mark joined the OT faculty at Creighton University in 2014 as an adjunct instructor and then as an assistant professor in 2020. He also served the profession at the national level as the Communications Coordinator for the AOTA Rehabilitation and Disability SIS. He touched the lives of hundreds of patients and students. He is remembered for his extraordinary character, therapeutic use of humor, and his joyful and generous spirit. The loss to the Creighton University and Nebraska OT community is heartbreaking.
